PHYSICAL THERAPY
Physical Therapy (PT) is required for a successful outcome following surgery. When you had your preoperative clinic appointment, a referral was placed for your postoperative PT. You should have already spoken with your preferred PT location to discuss scheduling your postoperative PT appointments. If you have not already done this, you should do this as soon as possible since the first postoperative PT is often scheduled to be within the first few days of surgery.
PT protocols are specifically designed for various conditions and types of surgery. These protocols provide an outline of the exercises, goals, and overall progression that may be expected during your PT. However these protocols are general outlines and the main goals of PT are that appropriate progress is made weekly and that there is regular communication between the patient, physical therapist, and surgeon.
Your physical therapist will also give you home exercises that you should do on your own after surgery. These exercises will vary depending on the type of surgery. You should perform only the exercises provided to you by your surgeon or physical therapist.
