DIET AFTER SURGERY

It is not not uncommon to have nausea after surgery, particularly for the first 48 hours. This nausea may be due to the anesthesia or narcotic pain medication. Do not eat a large meal immediately after surgery. Begin with food and beverages that are easy to digest (clear liquids, soups, juice, Jell-O, crackers, toast, rice) and gradually progress to your normal diet if you are not nauseated. If you do experience severe nausea or vomiting, you may be prescribed anti-nausea medication. If you have a history of post-operative nausea or significant car sickness, you may request a prescription for this anti-nausea medication before surgery.
