BRACES AND SLINGS

After surgery you may have been provided with an immobilization device such as a sling, brace, or splint. These immobilization devices are designed to protect any repairs that were made during surgery. Patients who do not follow the post-operative instructions about wearing their immobilization device are more likely to have unsatisfactory outcomes following surgery.

After surgery, you should wear your immobilization device at all times until your post-operative follow-up appointment. However in some cases, you may be permitted to remove it for home exercises, physical therapy, or showering. Specific details about how and when you should wear your immobilization device will be included in the paperwork you receive after surgery. The nurse in the recovery room will go over these instructions with you before you go home after surgery.
